The Second Glorious Mystery- The Ascension

Jesus remained on earth forty days after His Resurrection to prove He has truly risen from the dead. He commissioned the Apostles to preach the gospel to everyone and promises to be with them forever.

He will not leave them orphans, but will send the Holy Spirit to enlighten and strengthen them. Jesus proceeds to Mount Olivet accompanied by His Mother and the Apostles and disciples.

Extending His pierced hands over all in a last blessing, He ascends into heaven. As He ascends a cloud takes Him from their sight. He takes His place at the right hand of the Father.

What jubilation there must have been among the Angels of heaven at the triumphant entry of Jesus! The disciples leave Mt. Olivet and return to Jerusalem with great joy.

The Glorious Mysteries

The Glorious Mysteries tell us what happened after Jesus died. Everything that Jesus said would happen did indeed happen. We see the Glory of God!

In the First Glorious Mystery we journey to Jesus' tomb where he was buried after dying on the Cross. On Easter Sunday, his friends found that the tomb was empty. Jesus had risen from the dead as He said He would. Jesus came to them and showed them he was indeed alive and promised them that they would rise too.

In the Second Glorious Mystery, we watch Jesus Ascending up into heaven. Before leaving, He promised his friends that he would prepare a place for them there.

The Third Glorious Mystery tells us about the descent of the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus sent from heaven to lead people in this life and into the next life.

The Fourth Glorious Mystery is about Mary. Jesus loved her so much that he brought her to heaven immediately after she died. We say that Mary was assumed, taken up to heaven, so that she could be with her Son.

In the Fifth Glorious Mystery pictures Mary being crowned by Jesus as Queen of the Angels and Saints in heaven.

These Glorious Mysteries remind us that Jesus has a place in Heaven for us. He sends us the Holy Spirit who will lead us there. Our lives don't end in death, in a grave. God gives us a new life that never ends and that life is more beautiful than we can ever imagine.

The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery -The Crucifixion

For three hours our dear Lord hung on the cross. He was taking on Himself the punishment for our sins. He prayed to His Father in heaven, "Father, forgive them." He forgave the terrible sinner who became the Good Thief. He gave us His own dear Mother. He cried out because He was thirsty for our love. At length, He knew that God had forgiven our sins. Once more, we had the right to enter heaven. So He dropped His head and died. "Greater love than this no man hath than to lay down his life for his friends." Father, by the merits of the crucifixion and death of Jesus, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil.

The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery- The Carrying of the Cross

Pilate heard the people cry out, "Crucify Him!" So Pilate ordered Him to be nailed on a cross. But first He had to carry His own cross up to the top of Calvary. The cross was very heavy. The soldiers put it on His shoulder and it rubbed against His torn flesh. They dragged Him through the city and up the hill to die. The people laughed at Him and threw rocks and mud. When He fell, the soldiers kicked Him to His feet. Once along the way, He met Mary, His Mother. But she could do nothing to help her dear Son. Veronica ran out of the crowd and wiped His face with her veil. Some good women wept for Him. And Simon was forced to help Him carry the cross. Jesus did all for love of us. Father, by the merits of this painful journey to Calvary, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Amen.

The Third Sorrowful Mystery -The Crowning With Thorns

Jesus was the King of Kings, the King of the Jews. But the Roman soldiers thought this was funny. "Still, let’s pretend that He is," one of them cried. "For a joke let’s make Him a crown." So they picked up a branch of thorns, and made it into a crown. They pushed it into the head of our Savior. It hurt Him terribly. The blood ran down into His eyes. The thorns tore His skin and reached toward His brain. Then the soldiers put a reed in His hand. They threw a dirty red cloak over His shoulders. They laughed at Him and cried, "Hail to the King!" Jesus suffered all this because of our sins of thought and pride. Father, by the merits of this painful humiliation, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

The Second Sorrowful Mystery - The Scourging

Pilate, the Roman Governor, knew that Jesus was not guilty. But all the people cried out for His death. And because Jesus had taken our place, God, His Father, was willing to let His Son die. Pilate ordered Him to be whipped. The soldiers fastened Him to a stone column. Then with heavy whips with bones at the end, they beat His back. Jesus suffered terribly from this scourging. But He did not cry out. He knew many people commit sins with their bodies. We call these the sins of the flesh. Jesus wanted to suffer for their sad sins and wanted us to be strong against this kind of sin. Father, by the merits of Jesus in this painful scourging, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

The First Sorrowful Mystery – The Agony In The Garden

Everyone who commits a sin is a criminal against the good God. So he should be punished. But Jesus, our Savior, came to take the sinner’s place. He asked God to punish Him instead of us who really are the guilty ones. This suffering of Christ we call His Passion. On Holy Thursday after He gave us the Blessed Sacrament, He went into a lonely garden called Gethsemane. He looked ahead and saw all He was going to suffer. He saw all our sins. The thought of His Passion and our sins made Him sweat blood. This blood poured down upon the ground in His agony. Then Judas came with the soldiers. Like a traitor he kissed Jesus. The soldiers then led Jesus away to death. Father, by the merits of the agony of Jesus in the Garden, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Amen.

Jesus comes with his disciples into the garden "Stay here, while I go and pray."

Hail Mary...

He returns again from the garden and finds them all asleep.
Hail Mary...

Hail Mary...

Amen.

The Sorrowful Mysteries

The Sorrowful Mysteries tell what happened to Jesus when some people decided to put him to death on a Cross. He had not done anything wrong. In fact, he was always good to people, especially people who were sick or poor. On that day, which is called Good Friday, Jesus was sentenced and put to death. We call Good Friday "good" because God is always good to us no matter how bad things are.

Through everything He went through for us, Jesus knew God was with Him. What happened to Jesus makes us sad, but it reminds us that God is with us, even when bad things happen to us.

In The First Sorrowful Mystery we journey into to the Garden of Gethsemani in Jerusalem. There Jesus prayed for God's help because He knew what was going to happen to Him.

The Second Sorrowful Mystery takes us to the place where the soldiers beat Jesus with whips.

After beating Him, the soldiers put a crown of thorns on His head and made fun of Him. This is the Third Sorrowful Mystery.

Jesus was made to carry a heavy cross on His back to Calvary, the Fourth Sorrowful Mystery.

Finally, Jesus dies on the Cross, which is the Fifth Sorrowful Mystery.

We all know what it is like to be afraid. Someone has hurt us and made fun of us. Have you ever been hurt by someone, or made fun of? Perhaps it looked like people didn't care what happened to you at all. Have you ever had to do something very hard or painful? Maybe you were very sick, and it seemed like you were going to be sick forever?

Jesus felt all these and more when He was condemned to death and Crucified. Through these Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, Jesus tells us not to give up, even when things are very bad. God will help us through, God will give us the strength to go on.
